Commercial Waste Management, Middlesborough
Waste Knot Energy Plant, Middlesborough
Founded in 2019 in Middlesborough, WKE was set up to enhance waste management in the region while enabling large-scale energy users to significantly cut their energy costs. Our mission includes reducing carbon emissions and tackling the enormous amount of waste that ends up in landfills. In 2022, we began commissioning the UK’s largest waste pelletising plant, designed to deliver 250k tons per year, reinforcing our commitment to waste management in Middlesborough.
The project commenced on site in 2020 and was energised in 2021.

Scope Of Work
To energise this scheme, Alconex has secured a substantial load of 6 MVA from NPG, Distribution Network Operator. As a fully accredited Independent Connection Provider (ICP), we have handled the entire design, installation and commissioning for the connection, with the site subsequently adopted and maintained by the trusted Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO), ESPE. We were also instructed to bring a 10,000 kWh MP gas connection to the site.
To secure the plant's load, an offsite route over 6.5km for 2 x 11kV HV cables was required. Alconex carried out all the offsite excavation and reinstatement works, coordinated traffic management, and obtained S50 Licences.
The NPG Intake Switch Substation was installed adjacent to a new 11kV IDNO substation. Alconex was responsible for the commissioning of both substations in conjunction with NPG.
